Well this follows on from the previous story and unfortunately I have a correction. I think I have mentioned payback in previous stories but the young woman who murdered her husband WILL be brought to Lajamanu in police custody for payback. The Aboriginals have an agreement with the courts that the prisoner will be released to the community for tribal law to be carried out then they are returned to custody for white man law to be carried out. Apparently this also stops rioting between the families in the community which has happened in the past.
This is one reason for Aboriginal deaths in custody if they are not released for tribal law to be carried out they can be excommunicated from their community as a result have nowhere to go upon release plus most want payback so they would rather die if it's not carried out.
Anyway back to Lajamanu this girl (25yrs old) was in court today many rumors as to when she will return some say tonight (I doubt it when she was only in court today) most say probably within the next 2 weeks. The police have told us because of the seriousness of her crime there will probably be an order for a Doctor to attend the payback to ensure she is not beaten to badly. So guess where she will go after that........ you got it our well equipped trauma centre!!!!!!!!!!! Then she will be evacuated out. The family of the deceased decide and carry out payback. So that's the latest news in Lajamanu!!!!!!!
I only have 3 weeks to go although I have a sick interest to know exactly how it will all go down on one hand on the other I sort of hope it's after I've left.
Wow. That really is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea.
What an experience you have had, one that you will remember forever. Jasmine x
I don't think many white people have any idea. I never knew anything about it until I came here.
